Exploring the world: the benefits of studying abroad at the University of Tartu

Studying abroad can be a life-changing experience for students. At the University of Tartu, students have the unique opportunity to expand their horizons, immerse themselves in different cultures, and gain valuable international experience. In a recent podcast episode hosted by Vincent from Tiksu to UniTartu, Kristi Liivamägi, Study Abroad Coordinator at the University of Tartu, and Anton, a master’s student in Computer Science from Ukraine, shared their insights on the benefits and opportunities available for those considering a semester abroad.

Anton, who spent a semester in South Korea, reflected on the cultural differences and personal growth that come from stepping out of one's comfort zone. He chose South Korea because he had always wanted to explore Asia, as it felt like a completely new and fascinating world. “Every culture has something interesting, something valuable to offer. You grow personally when you meet people who have different beliefs from you,” Anton remarked, emphasising how this experience shaped his worldview.

Kristi highlighted the wide range of opportunities available for University of Tartu students through programmes such as Erasmus+ and ISEP (International Student Exchange Programme). "There are so many options, actually," Kristi said, explaining that students can study in Europe, Asia, or even further afield, with partner universities in countries like the United States, Brazil, Japan, and Australia.

For students who may be hesitant about taking the leap, Kristi reassured them that the university offers support. From organising info seminars to guiding students through the application process, the Study Abroad Centre is there to help. She also emphasised the importance of planning early, stating, “It’s a good idea to start planning quite early… some of the competitions start as early as January.”

Anton explained that he began planning his exchange studies by selecting 10 universities he was interested in attending. Then, he collected all necessary documents like transcripts, letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and others. But despite the paperwork, it was undeniably worth the effort.

Anton also shared some practical advice for students planning to study abroad. "Do not take too many courses when you go for an exchange," he suggested, encouraging students to make time for cultural experiences and socialising. He explained how he prepared in advance by taking additional courses before his exchange, allowing him to fully enjoy his time abroad without falling behind academically. However, you should not forget that the minimum number of credits to be taken while on exchange is 15 ECTS.

Kristi noted that one of the key benefits of studying abroad is the appreciation students gain for their home university when they return. Many students realise just how organised the University of Tartu is, and how quickly they can get responses to their questions. Additionally, the friendships and connections made abroad, along with the chance to learn a new language, make the experience truly enriching.

Additionally, if committing to a full semester isn’t for you, you can also choose an Erasmus+ traineeship instead. The best part is that the minimum duration is just two months. For students considering studying abroad, the University of Tartu offers an incredible range of options, from European universities to institutions in more exotic locations. Whether students are looking to gain new academic perspectives or simply broaden their horizons, the benefits are clear. In conclusion, there are plenty of different opportunities for studying abroad at the University of Tartu. Whether you are interested in exploring new cultures, expanding your academic knowledge, or making lifelong friends, this journey will leave a lasting impact. As Anton put it, "It’s truly an invaluable experience… don’t miss out on it while you are still eligible to apply."
